Vindu Palihakkara — APIIT all the way!
Vindu Palihakkara is a first class APIIT graduate. A social and animal welfare activist, a talented Latin and Ballroom dancer, an athlete and a supporter of The Sooriya-Artists Village, Vindu brings about cheer in everything she does. She was recruited into Virtusa’s Global Pre-sales team within a month of completing her BSc in Business Information Technology. In 2013 she moved to Brandix as a Business Analyst. She has left our shores for better opportunities, but shared her APIIT experience with us.
I first heard about APIIT Sri-Lanka and the programs it offered, when my elder brother enrolled for his Bachelor’s degree. APIIT is known for its commitment to quality, professional culture and value system. Having completed my local secondary education at a leading private school in Colombo, following my brother, I joined APIIT to pursue my higher studies.
I always thought having knowledge and practice in both IT and business is an added advantage and you could market yourself better in the industry, when your knowledge spreads across the two key areas in a business. Hence, I decided to follow the B.Sc. (Hons) in Business Information Technology program.
Having graduated with first-class honors in Business Information Technology (2010), I was recruited by the leading software solutions provider in Sri Lanka -Virtusa Corporation- within 1 month of completing my degree (even before I received the final classification). I must say, receiving my higher studies from APIIT, was an added advantage when facing job interviews, as APIITians are well-known for their professionalism, hardworking nature, and team building and management skills.
I would like to say that the environment, the infrastructure and the program provided by APIIT has been excellent. Through mandatory presentations and projects they have not just improved my domain knowledge but also my confidence, communication skills and professionalism, which are very important skills for a successful career.
While at APIIT, like many other students, I was motivated and guided by my lecturers to publish my final year thesis. Taking their advice, I presented the research carried out on credit scoring for a leading housing bank in Sri Lanka and published the findings at the Biennial ISAHP conference which was held in Italy in 2011. Having a research paper published under my name wouldn’t have been possible if not for the support I received from my project Supervisor, Ms. Manesha Pieris, Advisor Ms. Zeenath Hidaya and the academic staff at APIIT.
4 years later I rejoined APIIT to read for a Master’s degree. I didn’t have second thoughts about this choice.
Following the MBA program offered by APIIT, not only molded us to be better managers but also helped us create new networks with professionals from various industries. I like the hands-on approach of the program because it has taken my learning beyond theory through some very practical assignments. I also like that the lecturers have experience in various industries and they use real-life examples in their teaching. During the 2-year program, I have made so many connections with fellow students from other industries, which is very important as you grow in your career.
“I can proudly say that the experience at APIIT has broadened my horizons and choosing APIIT for my Bachelor’s and Master’s programs was the best decision I’ve made so far.”
Vindu, we wish you nothing but the best. Hope your journey in life is full of the cheer that you bring to everyone’s lives.
