Why we can and should treat aging now!
No matter how old you are, we all share the same fate… slow deterioration of our bodies resulting in loss of functionality and productivity and eventually leading to disease and suffering, aka “aging”… or do we?
Humanity has been intrigued by the idea to combat aging for millenia but could only come up with philosophical advice on habits to extend health.
“…it is our duty…to resist old age; to compensate for its defects by a watchful care; to fight against it as we would fight against disease; to adopt a regimen of health; to practice moderate exercise; and to take just enough of food and drink to restore our strength and not to overburden it.”
You can spend a lot of effort in improving your health, wellbeing, and performance, and extending it at high quality into old age by living a lifestyle governed by healthy habits related to diet, exercise and sleep. But even those of us with the healthiest habits are not protected from the damages that slowly builds up in their bodies.
Over the last years scientific breakthroughs have strengthened the evidence, that there are several ways to delay and even reverse the aging process, and thereby extend healthy lifespan via genetic and pharmacologic intervention, at least in mice! Scientist also identified nine interconnected factors that contribute to the damage that occurs with age and leads to various diseases, the so called “Hallmarks of Aging”.
Now is the time to translate these findings to humans, and develop new preventative and regenerative interventions that will slow down or even reverse aspects of the aging process to keep us healthy.
