The Journey continues…

Appiko has had an eventful year. Since the last update, Appiko has registered as a company, won a Government of Karnataka IDEA2PoC Grant and grown to a busy ensemble of people working towards creating high quality products in the wildlife conservation space. #tech4good

Winning the grant from the Government of Karnataka was a huge boost. Elevate 100 was an exciting platform — we were one of more than 80 companies that were shortlisted in the agri-tech sector. We presented a plan to assist farmers and villagers in human elephant conflict prone areas. Our solution aimed to generate reliable early warning reports on elephant movements in the vicinity, using high precision, power optimised sensors, that can communicate wirelessly to cross validate elephant detection and propagate corroborated information upstream to mobile phones, or data collection devices. More details on our proposed solution available here.

We will be updating our github with the tech specs and code, as work progresses. A more detailed technical post on the devices will follow.

While all this was going on, we have also started working with Sandesh Kadur at Felis Creations. We have begun by getting our feet wet with repairs, customisation and support of the equipment they currently use. Our long term goal, is also to understand the requirements and usage scenarios of technology in the wildlife conservation and photography space and use this knowledge and relationship to co-develop products that are bang-on. Almost all equipment (including cameras) used to monitor, detect, or photograph wildlife — like motion sensors, camera traps, active beam detectors are imported. Apart from the long-ish import cycles, technical support for repairs or damages are very hard to arrange. Providing high quality, indigenous products instead, is one of the prime missions for Appiko. We hope that our products can enable our conservationists and researchers to do more, more effectively.

Working with someone like Sandesh is a treat and we hope to learn a lot from him and his team. And of course, the small income stream from this activity is very welcome :)

Appiko’s growing team has settled in quite comfortably into the very pleasant space offered by Jaaga Startups. From coffee to lawyers to unicycles to startup advice — all our needs are met here and we look forward to welcoming more #tech4good-ers to our tribe here.
