learn leadership from basketball game

Entrepreneurs do not over-prioritize their business. They invest time in their personal activities like reading, exercising, going out with family, partying with friends and playing games. Here, I’m sharing the secret why they do so.

Activities like playing games and reading books are not just ways to refresh your mind, but they hold various lessons that can help you to do a successful business. Here, in this blog, I’m sharing how a basketball game can help you to become the true entrepreneur and take your business onto the top!

Business is just like a basketball game. You succeed one day, but on the next day- you may or may not. The whole thing is about leadership, teamwork and determination. Here are some of the leadership skills one can develop through a basketball game:

#1 Take an Initiative

In a Basketball game, doing teamwork doesn’t mean you pass on every opportunity to others; you have to take stand wherever you can. Similarly, in business, you need not wait for the phone to ring or someone to command you- you have to take an initiative.

#2 Have Confidence

Your confidence, your attitude towards the situation matters a lot! When you believe in yourself, you are more likely to give your best shot as well as influence others. So, believe in yourself! But, being confident does not mean to be arrogant or cocky. Confidence comes from preparation. When you are preparing for something, you will be more confident and thus, will surely win.

You should not just have confidence in yourself, but also have faith in your team. After all, nobody likes to follow someone who doesn’t believe in themselves.

#3 Encourage Open communication

Just like that in a basketball game, business also requires an effective communication among the whole team. A team where all talk and listen with the motive to share their views, promote business and continue conversations and actions in the future, is more capable to enjoy success with much lesser conflicts.

#4 Be competitive, but be Yourself

To win the competition, you need not act like ‘one of the guys’; your uniqueness matters. Similarly, you need not change yourself just because someone labelled you ‘Bossy’. As a leader, set your goals, take the responsible people with you, but be authentic. Don’t regret for being yourself!

#5 Learn from your mistakes

In business, you are likely to do various mistakes along the way. Admit them. Analyze them and learn from them. Do not repeat them in future. This way you will enhance the way you approach something and lessen the chances of failure.

As an Entrepreneur, always remember that all eyes are on you! If you get depressed and ‘show your back’ to the reality, the whole team will, and your business will come to an end.

#6 Play every position

Just like a player, you must be willing to play from any position- to do anything for the business to flourish. You might not excel in every position, but will gain experience about how to act at all the positions. With your personal experience, you can help your team to use their strengths and weaknesses in a better way.

#7 Make a fresh start

Like a game, treat every day at business as a new beginning. Give it all yours. Take a risk. Come up with new, innovative approach. Try again if you fail.

#8 Be Selfless

Winning in business, just like winning on the court, is not due to a single person’s effort; It demands the collective efforts of your team. So, don’t act like you are the most prominent member of the team, all are equally important. Also, winning a game is not about how good the leader plays, but it’s how better the whole team plays. So, appreciate everyone’s contribution and share the credit.

#9 Have a constant vision

Just like that in a Basketball game, every single person’s work is a crucial factor in business’ progress. On the basketball court, the coach or the team leader make it certain to recall the motto of the team, and keep all motivated. And here in the business, it’s the leader’s responsibility to prevent the employees from getting out of track. Hold meetings, have a discussion where you talk about the mission of the company. This way, you can keep the employees motivated and ultimately, give your contribution in the business growth.
