Deadpool…yes or no?
Hello — I’m here to help you answer the question I know you’re asking yourself on the inside right now- Should I go to the theatre to see Deadpool or should I download the torrent?
Now I’m not going to make as if I have never been guilty of judging a book by its cover. Or rather a movie by its trailer. Because let’s face it- we all have! Some more than others. And sometimes to our detriment.
There have been a few times, where I have seen a trailer and just knew that the movie was going to be a waste of approximately two hours of my life. So I waited for the torrent online and I downloaded it. Yes…I’m admitting it (don’t judge me cause you’ve probably done it too) I occasionally download movies!
Then there are times when I make that decision- I download the movie, get comfy and press play — and whilst watching it- I instantly regret not seeing it on the big screen.
This, I am happy to say, is not such a time. Nope…this time round I was prepared. I was rearing to go. I had been waiting for this movie for a long time. And after watching every single trailer on offer, I finally scored an advance press screening ticket to see it with a friend and two work colleagues.
Deadpool was either going to live up to the hype of its trailer(s)…or it was going to be an epic fail from which I’d take at least a month to recover from. Clearly I had high expectations for it.
And being one of four females at the press screening, surrounded by testosterone, cooldrinks and popcorn, I really felt as if I was responsible for making sure that I spread the word about this movie- should it be amazing — to my fellow estrogen filled humans (also known as females/ladies/girls/people with boobs and vaginas)…to let them know that they too could enjoy a good superhero flick.
However, now that I’ve seen it, I can say for certain that most of my ladies probably won’t get it. But then again, I’m not sure most guys would either.
You see Deadpool is an anti-superhero movie within a superhero movie, that’s trying not to be a superhero movie…which is what makes it so AMAZING!
If I lost you just now, then I never had you at hello anyway (see what I did there?) But if you’re still with me then the answer to the question is simple- YES! Go see Deadpool.
It’s Ryan Reynolds at his very best. The character of Wade Wilson is played to utter perfection by this hunky piece of Canadian love. The way Reynolds is able to bring a genuine likability to a very flawed, deeply troubled and somewhat miserable assassin is testament to his comedic acting chops.
Reynolds always shines brightest when he is tapping into that sarcastic and witty side of himself. He pulls off fast paced and large amounts of almost soliloquy-style dialogue so effortlessly.
And the fact that he is in a tight red number doesn’t hurt either.
But other reasons why this movie is the ultimate superhero movie, is that it breaks all the stereotypical boundaries of this genre. From the opening sequence and credits it already pokes fun at itself and the film making world. It refers to the director as a douchebag and Reynolds as a perfect specimen (which is actually true cause the man is HOT…have you seen him?)
It breaks the fourth wall continuously, which at first is a bit surprising but later you feel as if you are an integral part of the storytelling experience. For those of you who I lost at the beginning but for some reason you’re still reading this- the fourth wall is that imaginary boundary or “wall” between yourself (the audience or viewer) and the actor/actress.
Also if you have any comic book knowledge or if you have seen any Marvel movies before you’d probably get most of the “inside” jokes that are so well scripted in this movie.
The writers and director have managed to strike a balance between making fun of themselves, the movie industry, superhero movies and pop culture while staying somewhat true to the evolution of Wade Wilson into Deadpool. From villain, to anti hero to superhero with a comical twist.
The basic premise of the movie follows an attempt of a dying man- to live longer in order to be with the woman he loves. Things go awry of course, as is the nature of this genre! And Deadpool ends up on a journey to exact revenge against Ajax, the guy that made him into the mutant that he now is.
Along the way there are crude jokes, 90s music soundtrack (Salt ‘n Pepa on fleek), nudity, violence and gore, profanity and some not-so-epic…but still pretty great fight scenes.
The movie is by no means perfect, but it is a very different take on the superhero genre. It’s rated R for crying out loud…since when is a Marvel movie rated R?!
It’s cleverly done. It’s craftily scripted and Reynolds acts the shit outta this role.
If you are an avid superhero or comic book fan with an up-to-date knowledge of pop culture then this movie is for you…male and female alike.
If you can’t tell the difference between Marvel and DC comics…or you thought Reynolds’ 2011 movie The Green Lantern was a work of beauty…you need to step away from the ticket booth now and rather go watch some tennis or something. This is not for you.
But who am I to act like you mama and tell you what to do…decide for yourself- here’s a look at one of Deadpool’s trailers:
