Drawn into movies

Movies are not just movies. They tell stories, they bring the audience into a fictional world. They are entertained and enjoyable. All the great movies are created from talented world-class directors. Sometimes, I won’t remember who direct the movie. But as movie lovers, we should know more about the directors and his/her central theme so that we can be more engaged in the movies.

When working on the project of a film festival, which requires me watching many movies and taking notes, I realize what the thread is behind the movies and what the message come out from the movies.

Mike Leigh is the director that I’m planning to work on. He is an English director whose works primarily focus on society, working-class life and humanity. One of his significant films is called Secrets and Lies, which is talk about a black woman trying to find out her birth mother. It turns out her birth mother is a white woman. The way the two women play this scene is quite fascinating. They’re acting in real time, creating a new relationship on the spot. The white women felt the first inner stirrings of this daughter who is an optometrist, when her another daughter is a street sweeper.

It is a good and affectionate story of family.
