Film Music Interaction
Watching movies are one of my favorite thing. It helped me released emotions and moods. But something else has attracted me in watching them. It’s their music.
For the past couple of years I have spent my time making ambient instrumental music. It is my kind of therapy. In making music, I must visualized what am I trying to make. As a music maker, I often got inspired by watching them. I felt that movies give you sparks and shadows that build certain kind of moods. It is proven when people saw a romantic scene, a sci-fi scene, a dramatic scene, or any other kind of scene. They felt the moods instantly.
When you combine a scene with music, it fits perfectly for the audience. A scene cannot stand by itself without a music on the background. But music can stand by itself without a scene inside of it.
It’s easier to imagine something when you’re hearing music, rather than the opposite.
A Problem and A Gift
Many musicians struggle to find a film or scene for their music. It’s not because they don’t really know how, but one of their exposure comes from visual music (music video, lyric video, and visualizer video).
Musicians know how to perform well on stage. They know how to dress for a concert. But many musicians didn’t know how to make a good music video. They didn’t know which videos are good for their music.
That is why musicians must feed themselves with information other than musical information. It is a good thing because it is an opportunity to find a new inspiration. Musicians are forced to broaden their knowledge and widen their imagination.
So to conclude my point, musicians should not stick their mind into just one box called music. They must broaden their knowledge into other arts such as films, paintings, drama, and many others. You’ll never know when and where inspirations will hit you.
Making art is a form of pouring your mind and heart into a masterpiece. It is a process that people should admire, love, and respect.
