Some of my criteria for picking favorites are: Did I find myself seeking others to talk to about it? Did I find the story original/refreshing? Do I have a strong desire to re-watch it? Here’s the list:

  1. Arrival
  2. The Handmaiden
  3. Swiss Army Man
  4. Hell or High Water
  5. Colossal*
  6. The Lobster
  7. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
  8. Green Room
  9. Nocturnal Animals
  10. Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping

I haven’t yet seen Moonlight, Elle, La La Land, or Manchester by the Sea.

*I was fortunate to see Colossal early at Fantastic Fest. It’ll be properly released in 2017 by Neon—Tom Quinn and Tim League’s newly formed distribution company.

Favorite 2016 documentaries

I’m sure FX’s The People v. O.J. Simpson was great, but I can’t imagine it holds a candle to O.J.: Made in America. Yes, it’s an 8-hour documentary. Yes, it’s absolutely worth it.

  1. O.J.: Made in America
  2. Tower
  3. Tickled
  4. Gringo: The Dangerous Life of John McAfee
  5. Holy Hell

What the hell is Letterboxd?

You may have noticed all the links above point to a site called Letterboxd. In short, it’s like Goodreads for movies—letting you track movies you’ve watched or movies you want to watch.

In my next post, I’ll be writing about how I used the site to track every movie I watched in 2016. In the meantime, you can check out my top 10 list over there and Letterboxd’s own 2016 year in review (which features some really nice design and dataviz work):
