PastApp: Italian cuisine on your wrist

Apple has been offering a specific space to Apple Watch standalone apps for about one year.

Apple Watch was certainly born as a support device, but it isn’t simply a watch associated with the iPhone, that keeps us updated in real time on call or email notifications, it is also a device capable of monitoring our body and giving it support.

The experience of this challenge was unique: the goal was to create an app for Apple Watch, which would respond to specific requirements that characterize the device: speed and immediacy.

A little lost and running out of ideas, we launched too early on an idea that did not correspond to the guidelines of our mentors, but that made us fall in love from the first moment.

We decided to bet everything on the wearability of the device, by asking ourselves which daily action could be improved if managed or monitored by a device attached to our body and which did not require the use of both hands.

As good citizens of southern Italy we got there immediately: the kitchen, of course!

And this is how PastApp was born, an app dedicated to Italian cuisine, which supports you in the preparation of a good pasta dish in less than ten steps.

It happened to everyone to search and follow recipes online on a mobile device, such as iPhone or iPad, that need to be held in the hands.
Not to mention how high the risk of dirtying the screen is!

What could best help us if not a device on your wrist?

Being in an international environment, we realized several times that many people have no idea of what they are missing by not cooking a first course in a workmanlike manner.

PastApp is for all those who love to test their skills in cooking, starting from the foreign student who wants to try a good Italian dish, to the more adult person who wants to surprise someone at the table.

For a device that prefers fast actions such as monitoring data or changing settings, we have however decided to create a database of recipes, focusing on the way in which they are followed thanks to the watch wearability.

We designed a UX that would adapt to the device, creating an essential and immediate navigation. We took advantage of the contrast of color and the power of the icons to transmit information in the most immediate way: in fact the app is made up of only 3 views.

PastApp offers several recipes, including some vegetarian and vegan recipes. You just need to choose the recipe, select the number of courses, scroll to check the ingredients and the relative quantities according to the number of people and start with the steps!
The app also allows to set a timer to keep pasta cooking under control.
