Thanks to the newly implemented Digital Markets Act, Apple has been compelled to make substantial changes to its iOS operating system. These changes, primarily aimed at increasing competition and consumer choice, will give European iPhone users unprecedented control over their devices.

A More Open iOS

Apple has announced a series of updates that will allow users to customize their iPhones in ways that were previously impossible. One of the most significant changes is the ability to set default apps for a wider range of functions.

What’s new:

Customizable defaults: Users will be able to choose third-party apps as defaults for tasks like browsing the web, sending emails, and managing passwords.

App removal: Most system apps, including the App Store, Messages, Camera, Photos, and Safari, can now be removed.

Redesigned settings: A new section in Settings will streamline the process of customizing default apps.

Why the Change?

These changes are a direct result of the Digital Markets Act, a European Union law designed to regulate large technology companies and promote fair competition. Apple, as one of the world’s largest tech giants, has been subject to increased scrutiny under this law.

While Android devices have long allowed users to uninstall many system apps, Apple’s iOS has traditionally been more restrictive. With these new changes, iOS is now poised to offer more customization options than its Android counterpart.

When Can We Expect These Changes?

These expanded customization options will be available in iOS 18 and iPadOS 18. Apple will gradually roll out these features, with the ability to replace the default browser and translation app expected to arrive in spring 2025.

The Digital Markets Act has forced Apple to open up its ecosystem, giving European iPhone users more freedom and choice. While these changes are primarily aimed at complying with EU regulations, they also represent a significant shift in Apple’s approach to software customization.
