Facebook has commenced the integration of the chat feature for both Instagram and FB Messenger. Some editors at The Verge reported that an update popped up on their Instagram mobile app on their iOS and Android devices on Friday evening. The update came with the message “There’s a New Way to Message on Instagram” with a list of features including a “new colourful look for your chats,” more emoji reactions, swipe-to-reply, and the big one: “chat with friends who use Facebook.”

The DM icon on your Instagram app instantly changes to the Facebook messenger icon once you click the update button. “Chats on Instagram are indeed more colourful than before, with the sender’s messages shifting between blue and purple as you scroll” reported by The Verge. Even with the update, sending a message to Facebook users via Instagram is still not yet possible.

Facebook plans to merge the messaging features of Whatsapp, Instagram, and Facebook apps to enable cross messaging on all of those apps. So, even if you cannot message facebook user via Instagram right now, it will eventually happen, it is just a matter of weeks or maybe even days.

Facebook acquired Instagram and Whatsapp in 2012 and 2014 at $1 Billion and $19 Billion. I hope that merging the messenger feature with DM feature does not automatically synch your friends and followers on both platforms, there are some people I am friends with on Facebook that I do not want to follow me on Instagram.

Let us have your thoughts on this.
