Huawei has taken the number one spot as the largest smartphone manufacturer in the world, pushing Samsung to number two and Apple to number three on the list. For the past nine years, Samsung and Apple have occupied the top positions as the largest smartphone manufacturer, but that is not the story at the moment.

According to a new report by analyst firm Canalys, Huawei shipped the highest volume of smartphones worldwide over a quarter, a total of 55.8 million devices, experiencing a 5% sales reduction, while Samsung experienced 30% reduction in sales, bringing the total number of devices shipped to 53.7 million.

Ben Stanton, a Senior Analyst at Canalys, explained that Huawei’s growth this quarter is something a lot of people would have wrongly projected in the last year. The pandemic has affected the volume of Huawei shipments outside Chine, reducing it by 20%, but thankfully, its shipments grew by 8% within China. A higher percentage of Huawei shipments, about 70% comes from China, and that is a great value compared to that of Samsung’s, which is 1%.

“Our business has demonstrated exceptional resilience in these difficult times” as said by Huawei to The Verge.

One can say this is the first time Huawei has held the position for a single quarter, and there are concerns as to if Huawei will hold the spot for long. Some people believe that Huawei would not have achieved this success without the Covid-19 pandemic, well, only time will tell. “Huawei has taken full advantage of the Chinese economic recovery to reignite its smartphone business,” said Ben Stanton, a Senior Analyst at Canalys.

Will Huawei be able to maintain the number one spot? I guess we have to wait and see.
