Today is a New Day

Everyone is entitled to have some bad days. You mess up and get angry at someone. You yell at the driver in front of you or your start a diet and end up eating more than you did yesterday. How you handle this mess up is really important. Do you condemn yourself for it? Everyone messes up what you need to realize is that today is a new day.

Many people never get out of the rutt that they put themselves in. They use the “if only”, if only I wouldn’t have yelled, or if only I wouldn’t have got angry at the person who yelled at me or if only I didn’t eat the …. If only’s do not matter. Do you remember the book, “If you give a mouse a cookie?” Why do we always want what we think we can’t have?

Every day is a new day, a new start. A time to start a new beginning. You cannot change the past so don’t live there. If you have offended someone, then go make things right. It is their choice then to forgive or not. The first person that you have to forgive is yourself. Guilt or shame is unhealthy. Let it go.

Let’s talk about health, food, and “comfort foods.” You have decided to start a diet. First mistake, you called it a diet. A definitive negative connotation. First of all, the word die is right in it. When people think of a diet they think of all the things that they can’t have your emotions take over. You wake up and say, “Today I will start my diet.” You do well eating fruit for breakfast with a cup of green tea and you drink a big glass of water. Great start! You get in your car to drive to work and you see an advertisement for a sausage, egg and cheese biscuit. You want it but you remain strong. Then you get to work, it is John’s birthday and he has brought in your favorite doughnuts. He offers you one and you politely say no thank you. He says, “But it’s. my birthday and I brought these especially for you.” How could you ever let John down? He brought it for you. Guilt takes over or the saliva in your mouth and you cave. One doughnut won’t matter you say to yourself, I won’t cheat the rest of the day. Lunch approaches and everyone is going out to celebrate with John to your favorite pizza place. You could go and order a salad but you don’t. Pizza, soda, a few fries, and a piece of cake. Although you are feeling badly for blowing your “diet”, you have no “willpower” so for a snack you gobble down a bag of chips with another soda. And on the way home you figure that you will just start tomorrow so you get a large Italian sub with pretzels and another soda. “Oh well, I will just start my diet tomorrow.” You wake up and you have gained 2 pounds and you wonder how. And the saga continues. Sound familiar?

First of all just think of it as a lifestyle change. You are unhealthy, you need to lose weight, eating healthier will definitely help that process. Make better choices and change some habits. Let’s look at what you ate yesterday. Fruit was a great choice for breakfast as long as it was one piece of fruit. (By the way … Smoothies are not a good choice for breakfast if you are putting in more than one piece of fruit. Fruit contains sugar and even though it is a good sugar, too much is not good. What happens metabolically is you will feel great with that rush of sugar, however your body will not be able to process the abundance of sugar and it will have to store it as fat. In a couple of hours you will feel hungry even though you have enough calories to sustain you because the hormone that tells you that your are full is no longer working and the one that says you are hungry is. You also feel tired, a sugar crash. Make a smoothie with only one serving of fruit and throw in some nuts, again a serving size, and some kale or spinach. You will stay fuller longer and your body will be able to process it.)

Then you ate the doughnut, again you added too much sugar and carbohydrates and the same thing will happen as above. When lunch came you were starving because that hormone that was suppose to tell you that you were full isn’t working and the one that says you are hungry is.

Pizza, fries, soda, and cake yikes! Top it all off with a sub more soda and pretzels. You are storing fat there is no way that your body can keep up with all of those carbohydrates and sugar. You absolutely need to change your eating or you will just keep gaining. Eat the colors of the rainbow and I am not talking Skittles. Bring a snack of almonds, have a big salad for lunch, (watch the croutons, cheese, dried fruit and dressing they all add calories and fat), and for dinner choose meat, salad, and veggies. Soups with a clear broth are a great option. Creamy soups are filled with flour and are not as good for you.

So maybe yesterday you blew it but today is a new day. Say happy birthday to whoever is having a birthday and don’t be guilted into eating anything. You are in control of your body and your food. No one can force you to do anything you don’t want to do so don’t use them as an excuse. Take care of yourself, you can make this change. I believe in you.
