If you have been hired this blog will definitely help you progress your career upwards and if your still looking, all these points are still relevant and will prepare you for you’re future (make sure you are searching for jobs at apploi.com.)

How to act in the workplace

  1. Be on time! It is important to arrive early and be ready to work. This shows your boss you are organized, enthusiastic and prepared to work.
  2. Be ready to learn quickly. You will be thrown into the deep end so make sure you can swim! Don’t be angry or even sulk, this just means there is a lot of work on so just do your best. You were hired for a reason.
  3. Get to know your supervisor or manager. This is important in ensuring good lines of communication. Having good relations could also be beneficial for future of your career.
  4. Ignore any work drama. Work drama is always going to happen, whether it is from your colleagues or with your manager. To be successful you need to sidestep this drama. A good tip here is not to add your voice or comments to the discussion otherwise you will feel like our friend below!
  1. Avoid bring personal drama to work. I know it’s hard, there is always a lot going on at home but you have to try to leave that baggage at the door. It will complicate things and you will not be your most productive self.
  2. Make yourself an invaluable member of the team, be willing and open to do anything that is needed. KEY POINT: That being said you can’t be a pushover, I have seen it many times in my career, people are taken advantage of because they didn’t say no. Understand the balance.
  3. Set yourself career goals. Whether it’s money motivated or pure desire to move up in the world make sure you have a clear picture of where you want to be after being at the company for 1 year, 2 years and 5 years.

Not everything will go smoothly. Here are some tricky situations and how to combat them.

  1. If you enjoy certain areas more than others make sure you vocalise this to your manager. BUT have the correct attitude should your manager still require you to operate in the same post you don’t enjoy as much.
  1. Pay Rise please sir? Have an open and honest conversation with your manager. Before this conversation you MUST do the following;

* Look back at your original responsibilities when you were hired.

* Make another list of your current responsibilities and see if you are actually offering the company more. Try and look at this from your managers eyes.

* Prepare and practice what you are going to say so that it comes across clear and concise with confidence.

Now that you are ready there is one final point to remember… when you speak to your manager, it might come as a surprise (not that you don’t deserve the pay rise, but because people are so engrossed in their own work they probably haven’t even thought about it) and they might even feel blindsided. Don’t worry, try and stay relaxed and calm.

At the end of this conversation just ask for your request to be considered and a time frame as to when you will hear back.

After the conversation, follow up with an email listing your extra/new responsibilities and your appreciation for the consideration.

Here at Apploi, we wish you every success, and hope you find these tips helpful in establishing yourself. Keep an eye out at Apploi.com for new opportunities.
