Applying for a job can be a lot like dating. You meet a great company, you think you really hit it off and then all of a sudden you feel like you’ve been ghosted. Just like dating, there are a few unwritten rules on what to do when you don’t hear back.

THE THREE WEEK RULE

It’s okay to reach out 2–3 weeks after you apply for a job or have an interview to check on the status of the position. Keep in mind that you probably haven’t heard back for one of two reasons:

IT’S NOT YOU, IT’S THEM

There’s no reason to lose hope just yet- the hiring process can take a long time and the company may still be interviewing other candidates for the job.

NO RESPONSE IS A RESPONSE

Sometimes not hearing back, especially after you follow up, might actually mean that you didn’t get the job.

##

Not hearing back can be one of the most frustrating things in any aspect of life, especially when it comes to your career. If you didn’t land the job, it’s important to remember that you can still come out on top:

YOU’RE BETTER OFF WITHOUT THEM

Not hearing back can be a sign of other culture issues within the company and nobody wants to be part of a company with bad culture.

TAKE THE HIGH ROAD

Keep in touch with your interviewer if you had an interview- s/he can be a great contact if future positions open up within the company.

EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON

The company needs to be a good fit for you just like you need to be a good fit for the company. All this means is that there’s a better match for you.
