Azure Proximity Placement Groups and Application Resilience

Despite many public cloud infrastructure advantages, controlling your applications location to achieve the best performance is not an easy thing, at least until you use Proximity Placement Groups (PPGs) in Azure. Unlike your data center, where you control all the infrastructure and customizations, you choose to place the right applications on the right infrastructure to squeeze out the best outcome for your applications based on the demand. With the shared responsibility and resources model on the hyperscale public cloud infrastructure, it is not easy to ask for a public cloud infrastructure provider to have specific permission for your special applications. Configuring PPGs is the easiest way to control the placements for your Azure applications in production. When it comes to disaster recovery or ransomware recovery, you would like to achieve the same level of performance without going through configurations again based on what is available across another region or account. Appranix makes it dead-simple to achieve application resilience with PPGs.

Azure Proximity Placement Groups (PPGs)

According to Microsoft “A proximity placement group is a logical grouping used to make sure that Azure compute resources are physically located close to each other. Proximity placement groups are useful for workloads where low latency is a requirement.”

You use PPGs to achieve the following

  1. Low latency between stand-alone VMs.
  2. Low Latency between VMs in a single availability set or a virtual machine scale set.
  3. Low latency between stand-alone VMs, VMs in multiple Availability Sets, or multiple scale sets. You can have multiple compute resources in a single placement group to bring together a multi-tiered application.
  4. Low latency between multiple application tiers using different hardware types. For example, running the backend using M-series in an availability set and the front end on a D-series instance, in a scale set, in a single proximity placement group.

Achieving Application Resilience with Azure PPGs.

The easiest way to say this is that Appranix automatically takes care of it. Users need not worry about how they will be rebuilt to achieve the same level of performance for their failed applications or applications recovered from Ransomware attacks. Since, Appranix continuously discovers the production and failover regions of Azure infrastructure, users simply click the same button that they use to recover their distributed applications.
