Just start!

Your non-profit may be new to the world of social media, but don’t worry, just start! Think of your Instagram profile like your online community; in order to grow the community around your non-profit, you’ll have to interact with people! Posting pictures is only one part of creating an Instagram community around your non-profit. You’ll have to ‘comment & like’ other people’s content to drive the audience to your page. This can be time consuming work, but the goal of your social media profiles is to build a bigger community around what your non-profit does, and building a community takes time!

Another great way to build a daily following to your non-profit’s brand is to update your ‘Story’ as often as you wish. Prior to social media, the only way to see behind the scenes of a brand or a company was to work in the organisation, or know someone who works there, but now through social media you have the tools available to broadcast to your community what you’re doing day-to-day. Helping to give people a stronger idea of how your non-profit is changing the world every day is sure to engage more people with your organisation.

To the left you can see a piece of content we posted to our ‘Story’, you’ll notice it is a different size, this is super important as a normal 1080x1080px image won’t fit the dimensions as perfectly as a 1080x1200px image.

Sites such as Canva are simple and useful to use to create content for your non-profit!

Highlights

You now have the ability to save ‘Highlights’ from your story. So you could have a series of highlights focusing on different aspects of your non-profit. For example at Appreciate we currently have highlights about our ‘Blog’ and the launch of our new Corporate Social Responsibility platform. You could have a highlight about your recent ‘Charity Day’, or your non-profit’s 2018 Goals! Having a constant up-to-date highlight reel will help give that bit extra to your profile, users will know you keep your content relevant and will be sure to return to your profile to see the latest news and happenings of your non-profit!

Your Digital Currency

On Instagram, you have a digital currency which can help broadcast your content to users who may be interested in your non-profit, that currency being the #hastags! For every post you can embed 30 hashtags in the description of your post, so if you’re posting an image of a group of volunteers who have helped you to complete a recent project, apply the relevant hashtags which describe the content. E.G. #Volunteering #Volunteers #Charity #changingtheworld #GlobalCitizens #Motivation #Change #Impact etc. etc.

Over time you’ll start to understand which content works, and which hashtags increase the engagement with your IG profile.
