Half way around the world from the UK, the XXI Commonwealth Games is happening as we type on the Gold Coast.

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) welcomes more than 6,600 athletes and team officials from 71 Commonwealth nations and territories to the Gold Coast and event cities Brisbane, Cairns and Townsville, to share in the celebration of sport, entertainment and culture.

The largest sporting event to be staged in Australia this decade, GC2018 will feature the largest integrated sports program in Commonwealth Games history, comprising 18 sports and seven para-sports.

With this huge power to bring people together, the Commonwealth Games Foundation is set up to make a difference around the world. 🌍

The Commonwealth Games Foundation

The Foundation has a vision to build “peaceful, sustainable and prosperous communities globally, by inspiring Commonwealth Athletes to drive the impact and ambition of all Commonwealth Citizens through sport.”

About the Foundation:

“Sport underpins the unique connections and friendships which bring together a third of the world’s population as citizens of the nations and territories of the Commonwealth. For more than eight decades the Commonwealth Games Federation has taken a global leadership role in uniting the Commonwealth’s athletes, citizens and communities through the transformative and connecting power of sport.

We’re inspired by the diversity and dynamism of the Commonwealth itself — a voluntary association of 71 nations and territories — and its enduring commitment to human rights, democracy and the rule of law. Among our membership are some of the world’s largest and smallest countries, from India, with over 1.2 billion people to Nauru with a population of 10,000. More than 60% of the Commonwealth citizens are under 30.

Today, the Commonwealth Games Federation is far more than the curator of a great Games. As a cornerstone of the Commonwealth itself, our dynamic sporting movement — driven by its values of Humanity, Equality and Destiny — has a key role to play in an energised, engaged and active Commonwealth of Nations and Territories. And with new members joining, Gold Coast 2018 upon us, preparations for Birmingham 2022 well underway, and the high-profile Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in April, the Commonwealth is entering an era of renewed relevance.

Every organisation and individual that works with us and supports us in our mission is part of the Commonwealth Sports Movement. We are the modern Commonwealth, and we are more relevant than ever before.”
