Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are among the world’s sporting greats, and certainly era-defining golfing greats. The power of the platform they have, coupled with the power of sports can have a profound impact on people around the world. As the Master’s has rolled into Augusta and popular culture for another year, we thought we’d highlight Foundations born out of golf, which have an impact far reaching beyond the horizons of sport. ⛳

“When the foundation launched in 1996, I was 20 years old. I knew our junior golf program and the grants were having a positive impact, but the tragedy of 9/11 made me realize we needed to do more. I wanted a permanent, safe space for kids to explore their dreams. From there, we created the TGR Learning Lab in Anaheim and the Earl Woods Scholar Program, honoring my dad.

Over twenty years later, the results speak for themselves. We worked in STEM before it was a common acronym. To date, the TGR Learning Lab has served more than 175,000 students. We’ve introduced 85,000 girls to STEM careers and reached 1,000 educators annually, bringing them professional-development programs in STEM education.

We’ve also been pioneers in positive youth development, building resilience and developing self-advocacy skills in young people. Research shows this is critical to long-term success in life. We believe that if we give every student access to educational resources and show them that their self-worth is not defined by where they come from or the color of their skin, they will be unstoppable.

Our Earl Woods Scholars embody that tenacity, blazing trails to become tomorrow’s innovators, creators and leaders. At 98.7%, we have one of the highest college graduation rates among scholarship programs in the U.S. And our unique one-to-one philosophy provides critical support to our first-generation college students.

For the last two decades, we’ve done more for children who have less. And now we’re expanding our reach through TGR EDU: Explore, providing our award-winning programs to millions of students, teachers and families worldwide.

Quality educational resources can transform students and schools. They have the long-term power to impact crime, generational poverty and unemployment. I’m dedicated to the growth of this important work. We are just getting started.”

There’s a core program at the heart of the foundation revolving around one core goal: lifelong success that spans from the classroom to community and career. The Earl Woods Scholar Programme supports “high-potential students with demonstrated need and a commitment to community service”. The Program goes far beyond financial assistance as each Earl Woods Scholar receives mentoring support, specialised internship opportunities, career development and workshops to enrich every scholar of the foundation.

The Rory Foundation

In 2013 Rory set up The Rory Foundation to support children’s charities and ‘help kids live better lives’. After visiting Haiti as a UNICEF ambassador in 2011 following the devastating earthquake the previous year he started thinking seriously about philanthropy. He believes that “the future generation’s philanthropy will depend on the legacy of those of us presently involved and the example we set” (Coutts — Million Dollar Donors Report https://www.coutts.com/insight-articles/news/million-pound-donors-report/rory-mcilroy.html)

“Helping Kids Live Better Lives”

“This is what we do and what we stand for. It will be at the very core of every project we work with and every programme of change we are part of. The Rory Foundation is a non-profit charitable foundation with the ambition to have a positive impact on children’s and their families lives. Our goal is to release funds that seek to advance opportunity and lasting change for children who are suffering from ill health or who are unfairly disadvantaged or vulnerable to lifes circumstances. Our underlying values are ambition, passion and drive. These values lie at the heart of our foundation and will help us instigate real change for children in every country in which we work.

The Foundation focuses on three key themes :

HEALTH

We want to invest in bricks and mortar, infrastructure, science and technology to help children and their families.

COMMUNITY

We aim to work with young people deemed to be at risk in our society. To keep them safe and free from harm in their communities.

RESEARCH

We fund the research of projects that are most likely to make a difference to the lives of babies, children and young people.

They believe that every child has the right to the best healthcare that can be provided; that children should be able to look forward to a bright future and feel safe and free from harm in the community they live; and that research can help save and change children’s lives.

At the heart of The Rory Foundation these fundamental themes form the basis of why we have chosen children as the central focus to everything they do.

“Helping young people to enjoy the playing and personal benefits of golf”

The Golf Foundation works with schools, community organisations and clubs by providing adapted equipment, training workshops, resources, grants and support from a network of Regional Development Officers.

The Golf Foundation has two strategic aims:

  1. To provide any young person, regardless of background or ability, with the opportunity to enjoy the playing and personal benefits of golf.
  2. To help any young person to ‘Start, Learn and Stay’ in golf by providing a player pathway.

Values
All of our work is underpinned by a commitment towards safeguarding and making the sport more accessible to young people. We believe that we can help young people to enjoy the playing and personal benefits of golf by making it:

  1. Fun
  2. Child-centred
  3. Inspiring
  4. Innovative
  5. Enriching
  6. Inclusive

Underpinning Principle
The Golf Foundation believes that children and young people are able to develop playing skills and personal skills through golf, which will benefit them for the rest of their lives. We call this ‘Skills for Life’ and it is core to all of our work.

National Partnerships
The Golf Foundation is committed to developing the sport at the junior level by supporting the implementation of national development plans and by working in partnership with the golfing bodies in England, Wales and Scotland. It is a key member of the England Golf Partnership, Wales Golf and ClubGolf Scotland. The Golf Foundation supports youngsters from many different backgrounds through its national programme, HSBC Golf Roots. HSBC Golf Roots is supported by The R&A, headline sponsor HSBC, the European Tour, the Professional Golfers’ Association, the Ryder Cup Committee and Trust, England Golf, Sport England and the British Golf Industry Association’s ‘Grow Golf’ Fund. It also enjoys a good working relationship with youth-centred national partners outside of golf such as the Youth Sport Trust, StreetGames and Premier League 4 Sport.
