Is anyone a traveller who maybe wanders around the state/country at least once a year? If you are the one then you may know know travelling opens up a world of new experiences. You get to meet people of new cultures, values, and traditions. Get to taste different types of local foods and the list goes on and on and on.

However, planning a trip can often be overwhelming. It is, right? You have to plan which places you will visit, and the sites you want to capture in your camera and create your memory. All this can get a bit overwhelming, that’s for sure.

But what if I tell you there is one digital tool that has gained popularity among travellers for its effectiveness in planning; a “Moodboard”?

Moodboard is a visual collage, traditionally used in creative industries like fashion and design, and has found a unique and valuable application in travel. Here’s why moodboards are an essential tool for travellers.

What is a Moodboard?

A Moodboard is a collection of images, text, and other visual elements that convey a particular style or concept. It helps in visualizing ideas and setting a specific tone or mood for a project.

In the context of travel, moodboards can include photos of destinations, cultural icons, food, activities, and more.

Benefits of Using Moodboards for Travel Planning

  1. Inspiration and Visualization
Moodboards are perfect for gathering inspiration. By compiling images of potential destinations, travellers can visualize the kind of experience they want. This visualization can help narrow down choices and create a cohesive travel plan.
  2. Organization of Ideas
Planning a trip involves many elements, from accommodation to activities. A moodboard helps organize these ideas visually. Travelers can categorize their plans by themes such as adventure, relaxation, or cultural experiences, making it easier to prioritize and manage their itinerary.
  3. Communication and Sharing
Whether travelling with friends, family, or a group, a moodboard serves as a great communication tool. It helps convey the vision of the trip to others, ensuring everyone is on the same page. Additionally, it’s a fun and creative way to share travel ideas and excitement.
  4. Personalized Travel Experience
Moodboards enable travellers to tailor their trips to their personal tastes and interests. By focusing on the visuals that resonate with them, travellers can create a unique and personalized travel experience. This level of customization enhances the overall enjoyment and satisfaction of the trip.
  5. Memory Keeper
After the trip, a moodboard serves as a beautiful keepsake. It captures the essence of the journey and can be a cherished reminder of the experiences and memories created during the trip.

How to Create a Travel Moodboard

  • Step 1: Gather Materials
Start by collecting images, maps, quotes, and any other elements that inspire you about your desired destination. This can be done through magazines, online searches, and social media platforms like Pinterest and Instagram.
  • Step 2: Choose a Platform
Decide whether you want to create a physical moodboard or a digital one. For digital moodboards, you can use Appy Pie Design’s Moodboard Maker. For physical moodboards, a corkboard or a large piece of paper will work well. I would suggest going for digital moodboards. The rest is up to you.
  • Step 3: Arrange Your Elements
Begin arranging your collected materials on your chosen platform. Group similar items together and play with the layout until it feels right. Don’t be afraid to rearrange and edit as you go along.
  • Step 4: Refine and Finalize
Once you’re satisfied with the layout, refine the details. Add any final touches such as labels, notes, or highlights. This is the stage where your moodboard comes to life and becomes a true representation of your travel vision.
