The Special Awards Committee for Students (SACS) has imposed changes on the provisions and requirements of the special awards the University give every year to graduating and non-graduating students. The resolution was approved at the beginning of school year and is now in effect.

“The AUL Student Recognition and Awards Program aims to recognize individuals and groups with outstanding achievements in academics, leadership and service, culture and arts, and athletics and teamwork,” the first part of the resolution reads.

Chairman of the committee and OSS director, Jesus A. Barizo, stressed that the changes passed was to ensure that the awardees are “indeed outstanding and deserving.”

SACS, which is under the Office of Student Services (OSS), oversee the whole process from the search and application of students to the screening of the awardees every end of the school year. The awards are then given in a formal ceremony at the start of the new school year. The search for awardees for graduating students are conducted earlier since they are awarded during the school’s commencement exercises in April.

New requirements

For the St. Thomas Aquinas Award for Outstanding Academic Performance, if a student was enrolled in an internship or on-the-job training (OJT) course during the academic year, the committee will now require the student’s “composite grade from the partner institution and the subject teacher.”

St. Dominic de Guzman Award for Outstanding Leadership Performance will now be requiring applicants to have at least one published article in the Aquinian Herald or other college-based publications or journals, as well as a general weighted average (GWA) of at least 85% and with no failing grade in any subject during the academic year.

Students vying for the St. Martin de Porres Award for Outstanding Community Service requires careful and close coordination with AUL’s Center for Community Involvement (CCI) for their community extension services to be considered. They also must have least 83% GWA and must not have a failing grade in any subject during the academic year.

Meanwhile, for student artist hopefuls of the Fra. Angelico Award for Outstanding Performance in Culture and Arts, they must have participated in at least three performances in the current school year and must then provide a brief description of the engagement or participation, as well as secure a performance evaluation from their respective adviser.

Fr. Ernesto M. Arceo, O.P. approved the resolution on June 2. ■ By Aldrin C. Brosas
