There is a myriad of countries that are great to raise a family in. But why settle for great if you can have one of, if not the best? There’s a country that seems to outshine all the others in different ways when it comes to being a good environment for a family. Here are the reasons why Finland is the place that seems to have everything a family needs, and more.

1. It’s one of the safest countries in the world

Police of Finland, The “poliisi”.

According to the 2017 Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report, Finland has been recognized as the safest country in the world. This ranking was based on how safe it would be for tourists to visit the country. Considering the dangers of the world today such as war, crime, and terrorism- being safe and sound is something every family needs above all else.

Parents worry over their kids’ safety above everything else. Knowing you’re living in a country known for its safety helps turn this everyday worry into an afterthought.

2. It’s the happiest country in the world.

Finland is recognized by Forbes as the happiest country in the world. Finland earned this ranking by having positive ratings for:

  • Economy
  • Social Support
  • Life expectancy/Health
  • Freedom
  • Traces of Corruption
  • Treatment of Immigrants

Because these categories are things which make up a community, one might feel that Finland is just one big happy group of people who look out for each other.

Happiness is something every family needs to have, and living in a place where its positivity can rub off on people definitely helps.

3. You can get by just fine if you speak English.

Living in a country you weren’t born in can be scary, especially if you don’t speak its native language. If you’re reading this article, Chances are, you speak English. The Finnish are known for being well spoken in the English language, which means you won’t have much trouble conversing with them and living in the country even though you don’t speak Finnish.

Finland was ranked 4th in the English Proficiency Index measuring the top English speaking countries in the whole world. This means you and your family can get around and be able to have access to essentials by speaking English. Not only that, since the locals speak English, your family may even end up learning Finnish after some time!

4. The treatment parents get is on a whole other level

The “Baby Box” which expectant parents receive

New mothers can choose to either receive the baby box- a container holding many essentials for taking care of a baby, which can also double as a crib, which all mothers residing in Finland can apply to receive. If there is no need for this package, the family can apply to receive an untaxed sum of 140 euros per newborn- all covered by the Finnish government. The government also offers a paid maternity leave of 4 months-not only for regularly employed mothers, but also those who are self-employed, students, and even unemployed. And if that isn’t enough, “rainbow families”, or same-sex families are allowed to avail of these benefits.

Paternity leave may sound strange to some, with paid paternity leave sounding out of this world at that. But the Finnish crush this stereotype by encouraging fathers to take paid paternity leaves of up to fifty-four days. Immigrant families are also entitled to child care leaves to boot. However, just in case you want your family to be recognized as Finnish nationals, you can apply for citizenship in Finland after living in the country for 5 years straight and learning how to speak Finnish or Swedish. The financial side of raising a family in Finland doesn’t seem too daunting anymore, does it?

5. Nature in Finland is surreal

The Northern Lights of Finland

Nowadays, it’s easy for anyone to get lost in technology, especially for the generation today that’s been born surrounded by it. It’s important for today’s youth to not lose touch with nature to stop them from feeling robotic. Finland helps prevent this since it is covered in trees, lakes and alike.

Not to mention the spectacular northern lights that families can catch on special occasions, which is a rare treat most people don’t even get to experience ever in their lives. With technology taking the world by storm more and more as the days pass, it truly makes seeing something like the northern lights feel like a spectacle.

While there’s no perfect place in the world to raise a family, Finland definitely seems like the closest thing to it.
