In several Arab states there are laws that ban eating publicly during Ramadan. A recent fatwa by the Egyptian “Dar al-Ifta” — the institution responsible for issuing fatwas or verdicts according to interpretations of Islamic law — issued a fatwa deeming eating in public during fasting time a sin. Egyptian authorities had also arrested people while at cafes in the past weeks since the beginning of Ramadan. Such incidents aren’t exclusive to Egypt but following much public denunciation Dar alfta removed the fatwa from their Facebook page. Some Muslim clerics chimed in to assure that there is no compulsion in religion and that there is no evidence of punishment indicated in Islamic text, while many joined the debate online with the hashtags #I_wont_Fast and #Eating_Publicly_Is_Personal_Freedom. Together, they expressed support or denunciation for the laws.

Egyptian high school exam contents have been leaked on social media, causing a national uproar. Many view the leaks as an indicator of the broader deterioration of Egyptian education and public institutions, adding to existing frustrations about earlier exam cancellations by the Ministry of Education. The high school exam, usually standardized and coordinated nationally, is key in Egypt and many other Arab countries, as scores normally determine who goes on to pursue higher education and what majors a student can enter.
