Coming alive

When the sun goes down, the Sevillanos come out. After a long siesta in the boiling afternoon, the city is ready to eat, drink, and be merry. Everybody of every age participates in the night time festivities. Thus, it is not unusual to see a child barely only old enough to talk or a person barely young enough to walk up until the time when most people go to bed. Sevilla is not just a place where the twenty-somethings rule the night life, unlike the case in so many other cities. This party for all ages is quite visible in my barrio of Triana. Abuelos y niños alike are out and about, graciously welcoming the cool summer air. The neighborhood and the entire city itself, for that matter, becomes energized with the sounds of clinking glasses, hearty laughter, and buzzing insects. This energy that permeates the city is palpable and impossible to ignore. Whether from families and friends spending the evening at one of the many outdoor cafes or the more ambitious partygoers preparing for the long night ahead of them, even a foreigner can detect the importance of the hours between 10:00 and 5:00am. Never in my life have I experienced so much brightness and joy as a result of mere socializing. In Sevilla, night time is really where one can sense how strong the Spaniards’ sense of community really is. Not only that, but there is an acceptance of anybody into this community, only if for a night of drinks and fiestas.

Speaking of fiestas, the night life in Sevilla is hopping at all times of the week. With the plentitude of clubs and bars over a short distance, I have found it quite simple to find my niche, even after only being here for a little under a month. I am fortunate enough to live within walking distance of Calle Betis and Alfalfa, two of the best places to party, whether you’re a foreigner or a local. The first time I went out, I was astounded by the sense of joy that comes with drinking tinto and laughing with friends in a huge plaza. Sevilla is incredible because, no matter what state of mind everybody may find themselves, each and every one of them just wants to have a good time, as is obvious by the never-ending laughter and music ringing through los calles.
