As depression’s shadows creep on quarantined work-from-home souls, we strive to find activities to scare them off. One of the first things that come to mind is Games. After all, it’s not always we have time for exploring new horizons. Nonetheless, there is a problem: while we want a fulfilling experience, we don’t want to accidentally spoil us beyond the point of surprise. Thus, I decided to give you spoiler-free descriptions for 5 indie-games that will take you to places.

  1. Subnautica.

Being stuck in quarantine is somewhat similar to what the protagonist has to go through. It’s an underwater survival, spiced up with horror elements. You’ll have to explore, craft, and try your best not to freak out when you’ll meet “it.”

Est time: 30h. You’ll need: To go deeper. Be aware of: Thalassophobia

2. Hades

If you rather stay away from seas, but still can’t keep your thoughts from escaping four walls, I have a game just for you. Zagreus, just like you, wants to get outside. Hades is the latest game from Supergiants, who are famous for their outstanding musical accompaniment, eye-pleasing art, and soulful writing.

Est time: 15h. You’ll need: To dash a lot. Be aware of: One more run.

3 Thea: The Awakening (or The Shattering)

In case you enjoy mythology but are tired from Zeus messing things up, you might enjoy a strategy game around Slavic folklore. It will lead you into a dark world, where you’re free to face well-written quests and do your best to survive.

Est time: 30h. You’ll need: To Gather. Be Aware of: Every encounter.

4. Ruiner

One thing you might miss while staying at home is parties. You know what, let’s fix that. Here is a game that makes you feel like a techno-samurai who listens to rave 24/7. As they say, shoot, slash, and dance their heads off.

Est time: 6h. You’ll need: To Intentionally die 50 times. Be aware of: cats.

5. Celeste

Maybe staying at home is a good opportunity to do something you set aside for a long time. Well, our next protagonist really wants to climb a mountain and you should help her. It’s a bright-colored platformer where picking strawberries can be a real challenge.

Est. time: 12h. You’ll need: To time like a pro. Be aware of: rage-quitting.

And if these are not enough to keep you at home, here are some other cozy games you can check out: Torchlight, King’s Bounty, Faster than Light, Moonlighter, Tabs, Bad North, Kingdom: New Lands, minit, Mutant year zero: road to eden, Transistor, Pyre, Sacred 2, and This War of Mine.

Stay Safe, Stay Healthy, Stay Home.
