Sometimes it’s good to be shallow.
Researching and selecting light fixtures has to be one of the more time intensive activities you need to perform as an architect or designer, which is often compounded by dense, difficult to navigate lighting manufacturer web sites that fragment critical information across multiple pages of their site. When you add your own project constraints to those challenges, it’s enough to make you scream — or fall back and use whatever worked the last time.
One of those constraints is the constant battle with your MEP engineer over ceiling height; you need to maximize it for the occupants, the engineer need to maximize the ceiling plenum for their equipment. Oh yeah, there’s structure up there too. With the help of our friends at Tillotson Design Associates, one of NYC’s great lighting designers, we’re highlighting shallow depth fixtures that can help you achieve those high ceilings AND satisfy your engineers too. Save these fixtures to your Firm Library — and you may want to add a “Lighting Standard” tag also, so these can be quickly found by you and your colleagues on future projects.
Baflux LED/7 is an LED downlight with a 7” aperture. Its unique parabolic reflector and cross-baffle assembly provide precise optical control and low aperture brightness with shielding angles no less than 35°. Recess depth is only 4 1/8”. Its shallow depth permits mounting in constricted plenums.
