Sex, Lies, and Campus Tribunals
Betsy DeVos has proposed reforms to Title IX guidelines. Some of the attacks she’s faced are unfair.
Last week, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos proposed new guidelines for the enforcement of Title IX, the 1972 federal law that prohibits sex discrimination in education, with regard to sexual assault and sexual harassment on college campuses. DeVos has been under fire from victim advocacy groups, Democrats, and much of the media since last year when she first announced her intent to change Obama-era policies, in part to better protect the rights of accused students. The reaction to the unveiling of the new rules has been predictable, with DeVos accused of “betraying survivors” and “trying to make it easier to commit sexual violence in schools.”
