The Accidental Masterpiece of Gucci Menswear

A prominent fashion house uses a runway event to deconstruct masculinity. What did they find?

Writers have to know when not to weigh in with opinions. Yes, sometimes this sentiment is used unreasonably — such as when a writer’s ethnic background or sexual preference is used a priori as a reason to discount their ideas — but it remains true that when we are extremely uninformed we should be hesitant about committing thoughts to the page. Fashion is not a subject I would typically write about. (A simple glance into my wardrobe would tell the reader why.) But sometimes it takes an outsider to point out what is obvious. Whose judgement on a cult would you consider most reliable? A member of the cult or anyone else?

Gucci is not a cult. For one thing, its services are more exclusive, and for another, Scientologists tend to have better clothes. The luxury fashion brand has swelled into a financial and cultural behemoth, in part thanks to the innovative lyricism and musicianship of Lil Pump’s smash hit “Gucci Gang.” Want a belt for four hundred dollars? They are your men.
