Design Statement

I chose to approach the assembly assignment by sketching out multiple shapes on a five by five grid. After planning out many different shapes, I chose a shapes that resembles a concave hexagon. This shape was ideal as a study carrel because the leg of the shape allows the person inside to be hidden. The outer edges of the shape allows for it to be arranged in many ways to recreate the space that it might occupy. The inside of this carrel was designed to have a table, a mini shelf, and a seat. A singular study carrel is a place that people look for privacy as well as relaxation. To accommodate that idea, I wanted a seat that would be made of something that cushions and forms to the body. In order to find the ideal curve and slope at which the seat should be shaped, I studied the forms of a person as they slide down a chair from an upright position to get more comfortable. I then used one of the curves as the curve of the seat.

From this simple shape, I was able to create multiple arrangements that allowed for the study carrel to couple or cluster. To further modify the space that the study carrels may occupy, I added shelves that form to the outside of the carrel as well as another seat. This outside seat is so that people who browse the shelves would have a nearby and convenient place to sit. Of course if they require a more comfortable and long term seating, they could seat themselves on a work table. The plan of the work table is inspired by the plan of the carrel. Its simple shape allows it to be arranged in many ways as well as linearly. I chose to keep the table simple in order to make the chairs more comfortable. I went back to the study of seating positions and chose the curve that described a straight seating position. This was so that the chair helps people keep the right posture required to stay focused on their work. I added a small shelf on the bottom of the chair so that it allows for a space to put personal objects.

The book stacks were made to be able to accommodate to the form of the carrel. This was so that the combination of the stacks and carrel could define yet another different space. A person searching for a book in a specific section would be able to use a carrel for easy access to the section they needed to be in. The display case was designed to have a combination of open shelves and glass covered shelves so that there would be different options in what is displayed. The largest compartment has no shelves and has a glass covering so that something can be hung in there, such as paper, or fliers.

Although there is a continuous relation to the different “furnitures”, they aren’t angled the same or don’t look the same. There are slight variations that allow each item to form a space of their own.
