Project 1A — Material Systems Mapping

Manhattan Analysis

Chinatown Analysis

Material Analysis Mapping:

After analyzing the materials across the neighborhoods of Manhattan, it was interesting to find that the majority of the borough was in fact made out of brick rather than concrete, steel, or glass. According to the income map, the wealthiest parts were made out of brick as well, which makes the valid conclusion that there are different types of brick used across Manhattan in terms of value.

When zeroing in on Chinatown, the anomalies became the main focus to investigate. The material of concrete, plaster, glass, and tiles were used for everything non-residential, such as hotels, banks, churches, and commercial places. Looking further into the these anomalies, the materials did not categorize the expense of the non-residential buildings, which was an interesting discovery.

All together, the conclusions and observations made from the material analysis arises the question: What material will the library be made of? Will it stand out with the rest of the anomalies, or will it be a mainstream material?
