Pre fabrication has expedited the construction process and has made the replacement of components in a structure relatively easy. With prefab components, library administration can choose from a catalog which parts and how many they will need for the allotted space. Assembly is an easy process with built in connection points and space under the floor for utility — wires for electricity, pipes for plumbing, vents for air conditioning.

The Group Table acts as a meeting point for a community for discussion, group work, conferences and meetings, and also as a projection room. The top of the bench-seating on either side of the tube flips open to reveal storage space. The backrest of the bench plateaus to allow addition storage or for placement of material behind the occupant. This particular component comes with a cap at one of the ends of the structure. The cap provides more definition of the space as well as access to a flat wall which allows placement of a projection system or a TV. The cap also makes this component a private space — only entering from one opening and disallowing passage through the tube.

The Stacks are designed to follow the curve of the tubes wall while still allowing the space needed for placement of a 12in x 17in book. The curve allows the books that are normally at the furthest and least comfortable position for eye level viewing — top and bottom shelves — to extend out closer to the occupant while the middle shelve are further away. This creates a comfortable viewing angle for the user to all shelves.

The Study Carrel component allows spaces for 2 individual study desks, chairs, shelving and partitions. The partitions double as both an enclosure for the occupant in the carrel, as well as defining the space for the center hallway for passage through this component to others. Along with the partitions and desks, there is also built-in shelving against the curved wall of the tube that create additional storage space for placement of smaller items.

Example of Component Assembly

Assembly is left up to library administration, but the possibilities and combination of the components in a linear fashion are endless.
