The “parti” that drove me to make certain decisions for this library primarily has to do with the shifting of the programs and its effects. The secondary interest was maintaining a hierarchy of the most public (bottom) to the most private (top). Although the main programmatic functions were able to follow this system, my services were on their own hierarchy. Furthermore, this drove me to putting the services on the first floor from a gradient of public (entrance) to the most private (mechanical and storage rooms.)

Auditorium process

The idea of using a hexagon and manipulating its shape came from the initial study carrel that is built and will eventually become integrated within the library space, however, I found it interesting to continue pursuing the hexagonal shape in that it will give me the opportunity to work with two different scales: an individual scale (carrel) vs. community scale (library.)

PLANS

Throughout the shifting of the programs, there were adjustments made to accommodate specific type of spaces. For example, within floor 03 there is a shifting process that leads to three different types of spaces for reading/studying. And within floor 04, the shift leads to having cantilevered carrels to give the reader an opportunity to explore through the outside, not just the inside.

Plan and Section

There are three different types of circulations in this library. The egrees, main, and auditorium. The egrees is colored in light green, in that it is a continuous staircase for emergencies and usual circulation if it is crowded, and the main circulation is the dark blue staircases, in which it is shifted around to accomodate the location of the programs. The third circulation, which is in red, only goes up to the auditorium from the first floor. It is a major staircase that is evident when you enter. It only leads to the auditorium so that when the library is closed, the auditorium is open to the public for events and after-hour activities.

An attempt in modeling the programs and placing them in a way where the shifting makes the greatest effect in terms of what one would experience. The auditorium has planes to represent the seatings for now, however, one can still see the idea of the inclined seats to attain the utmost advantage of the space below it as well.

The programs go as follow (from top to bottom, private to public)

Study carrels // private rooms

Book stacks // main reading area

Auditoriums

Entrance // Services
