Architects for Change — OUR STORY

Architects for Change Members 2019
More than half the world’s population now lives in cities, and that figure will go to about two thirds of humanity by the year 2050.

Cities are facing extreme growth in population, they are the hubs for culture, business, and life. This growth is creating environmental problems, social segregation, and extreme poverty. If we want to solve these problems and envision a sustainable world, we must think about the critical role architects and designers play in the process.

Architects and designers play a critical role in achieving this vision of a better future for our communities — safe, inclusive, and sustainable communities. They must reflect on their social responsibility, by getting involved in advocating and designing public housing, upgrading slum settlements, heritage preservation, designing public transportation systems, designing green and public spaces, and including people in their design decisions.

Unfortunately, there is a big gap between the current educational system at architecture and design schools and the cultivation of the social responsibility. Due to a rigid curriculum, young people don’t get the opportunity to engage in solving real critical problems while in college.

At Architects for Change, we believe architects and designers must get involved, at an early stage, in solving the environmental, social, and urban problems of their communities.

Architects build Communities not only buildings

At Architects for Change, we believe in the power of architects and designers in building and empowering communities. Our solution is a youth-led platform that empowers and inspires young creatives (architects, designers, and artists) to become catalysts of change through design and socio-cultural practices, by getting engaged in extra-curricular education, community engagement, and collaboration.
