Chiagozie Enwonwu wins Undergraduate Category of the inaugural A3-Archnet Prize

Chiagozie Enwonwu, Winner A3-Archnet Prize [Undergraduate Category, 2020]

Chiagozie Enwonwu, 21 is the Winner of the inaugural A3-Archnet Prize in the Undergraduate Category for her essay on Egedege N’Okaro, Benin which is recognised as the first 1-storey building in the ancient Benin Kingdom. Chiagozie is a student of University of Benin studying to earn a BSc in Architecture and was the past vice president of the Architecture Student Association 2018/2019. She once interned at Earthscape Concept in Lagos and describes herself as an ambitious student with leadership skills.

Ogunsetan Abdullah, 19, a student of architecture at the University of Lagos, Nigeria comes 2nd place for his essay on Ode Omu Mosque, Osun, Nigeria while Grace Izinyon, 21, currently studying for a BA in Architecture at the University of Westminster, UK receives honourable mention for her entry on Makoko Floating School, Lagos.

The A3-Archnet Prize for Writing on African Architecture was created to form a selection of researchers who will jumpstart the digital documentation of Nigeria’ built heritage and form part of the A3-Archnet team for this purpose. This undergraduate category was created by the Prize jury to ensure fairness. The Graduate Winner will be announced in the coming days.

Baba Oladeji, Founder of A3: Archives of African Architectures is encouraged that this Prize has demonstrated that a future crop of architects in Africa will be armed with knowledge of forebears who created important buildings, while laying the foundation of A3’s documentary purpose.

Michael Toler, Content Manager of Archnet and Interim Head of the Aga Khan Documentation Center at MIT is looking forward to broad knowledge collaboration that furthers Archnet’s mission to remain an open access resource providing all users with resources on architecture, urban design and development in underserved communities with substantial Muslim population.
