Superpositioned for Climate Impact: Investing in SEEQC

--

If you’ve been following our recent newsletters, you already know two things: First, high-performance computing is fueling a massive surge in energy demand, with data centers now accounting for nearly 40% of the new load on U.S. grids. Second, we at ArcTern continue our relentless hunt for opportunities to decarbonize this space.

To that end, we are thrilled to announce our most recent investment in SEEQC — a bold bet that compute efficiency can advance in leaps, not steps. At its core, this investment reflects our belief that when done well, quantum computing is not just “greener” but is transformational by being 1000x+ more efficient. This is the same view SEEQC shared with Jensen Huang at this year’s GTC, where they showcased a solution that requires nanowatts of energy per qubit, a billion times improvement over state-of-the-art quantum computers.

It’s not just amazing technology:

Undoubtedly, SEEQC’s underpinning technology is fantastic. While the market is focused on making the most robust qubits, SEEQC has focused on the technology that makes those systems scale. Their solution is deeply engineered, elegantly integrated, and critically, devoid of science risk. Explaining the tech would be a dissertation, so we’ll just say this: it’s not sci-fi. It’s here. And it works.

But a quantum company is not built solely on “cool technology.” Success demands a rare breed of leadership — one that can navigate markets that don’t yet understand them, steer toward commercialization without losing sight of frontier science, and rally the world’s best minds around a shared mission. As you would expect, this is hard to do, yet that is precisely what John Levy has done alongside his leadership team of Oleg Mukhanov, Matthew Hutchings, and Shu-Jen Han. They have meticulously stitched together a team that balances deep technical understanding with one shared conviction: the road to quantum supremacy will run through SEEQC.

Our investment in SEEQC is not just a bet on Quantum Infrastructure — it is a bet that computing can be done better. That probabilistic AI belongs on technology that is inherently non-deterministic. That we can balance our needs for progress without exponential energy consumption. And of course, that a product can make a company good but a team makes a company great. Keep an eye out for their name in 2025 — big things are coming.
