In 2011, a magnitude 9 earthquake hit Japan. This earthquake caused a nuclear meltdown and spread radioactive material across the country. Joi Ito, the current director of the MIT Media Lab was unhappy that the government and media were unable to report data about the location and extent of the radioactive zones. As a result, Joi worked with several other people to create Safecast.

Safecast Map

Safecast is a platform that allows people from all over the world to record data about radiation and upload it to the internet. In other words, Safecast pulled info from volunteers and compiled it into a large and open dataset of information.

This method of pulling can be contrasted with the current method of pushing. If you look at corporations and governments, they all assign tasks to management and the management assigns these tasks to those beneath them. On the surface, this seems to work: an organization leader (President, CEO, etc.) makes a decision and assigns a job to those that can fulfill the responsibility. However, we know that this doesn’t always work out. While it is important to have a general vision, a single leader doesn’t have the bandwidth necessary to respond and react to everything. In this day and age of ultra-fast innovation, it is more important than ever to be able to quickly react to environment.

What’s the alternative to pushing? As Safecast demonstrates, pulling is a more efficient and powerful way of getting things done.

Crowdsourcing

At Aether United, we will use the Ethereum blockchain in order to pull information from our customers and funders. Token holders will be able to make decisions using prediction markets, liquid democracy, etc. to help guide our eSports team. By being able to get input from people all over the world, we can innovate and get ideas much faster than any other company.

TL;DR:Aether United aims to utilize crowdsourcing in order to pull ideas from a vast amount of people in order to make better decisions, be more agile, and be more innovative then existing organizations.
