Is Libertarianism Christianity?

“Fundamentally, Christianity is about our freedom, the ability to choose to have a relationship with God and believe in him. Given the importance of the underlying principle, I have chosen to live my life in that manner as well. To my understanding, freedom in our everyday, utterly practical lives means the free exchange of goods and ideas, the freedom to speak one’s mind, the freedom to travel, the freedom to pursue happiness, the freedom to reap what once I was, and the freedom to come to the ones on terms with God. So you’re going back to our initial question- does that make me a Christian Libertarian? I think it just makes me a Christian.” Jacqueline Isaacs in Called to Freedom

That is such a payoff of a quote. That is how one concludes an argument. It is very bold, blunt, and mic drop-ish.

First off,

It attacks people’s views of “the Christian life“ or the holy sanctified life. It challenges those that primarily see our Christian duty as a rule follower. The modern-day Pharisee squad is known as pietist, or the morality police. They are not able to say freedom in Christ in the same sentence unless they are saying freedom from something, the devil, instead of freedom to relationship with God. They might be the oddballs out when we get to eternity when everyone is perfectly moral and can never sin again, they will be left with no one to lift their nose to.

Isaacs is challenging those same people’s views on government. They take the notion that the government is public servants as a chance to try and drive out any immoral act they despise. They gave the thumbs up when the government chased after those terrible drug users in those sexually immoral pagans. Their life in the church is to wag their finger at those they are in fellowship with, and a government wags their finger on their behalf towards everyone else.

Isaacs throws the piety squad and places Jesus as the rightful King and master shepherd of his sheep. She knows that the word of God with the guide of the Holy Spirit is a true help to believers. While the church is a vital guide to our faith doctrinally and practically, we do not have a group relationship with God. We are all married to Jesus, but he is betrothed to each one of us uniquely. Each one of us must decide what is true faith and discern the correct doctrine for ourselves. The church is not there with us at home, at work, or at play when our faith has lived out in the world.

In my forthcoming book on a biblical view of political government, Christian libertarianism versus Theonomy goes head to head. Both claim to be the rightful heir to the throne of the Christian government. In order to not get too far into my basic argument, Jesus and the apostles both argue that the old civil law, which was drawn from the old covenant made with Moses, has been fulfilled in Jesus, and now mankind is under the new law of Christ established by Jesus in the new covenant. So, Jacqueline Isaacs is talking with the idea that libertarianism is just Christianity lived out in our political lives. And I can agree with her. Based on my study, I can agree with her that the teaching of the New Testament Christianity and the new covenant parallels the teachings of Christian libertarianism. I want to end this article with the last part of the quote.
