I think I finally found my TikTok audience.
My first TikTok account was banned, likely do to a meme I made making fun of Jennifer Lopez.
While that account had 5,000 followers and an invite to the TikTok Shop, I saw no sales. Literally, like, none. I was working hard covering weird news and making memes, but hardly anyone bought my books. In fact, a lot of my content was attracting trolls, and the one time I had success in selling my books was because people were reacting to a troll.
They were getting revenge on his incompetence and sexism by buying my book. This is a kind of strategy, I guess, and I appreciated everyone’s support, but in the long term, I do want people to buy my books because they like them.
When my first account was banned, it took me a month or so to even create a new one. To be honest, I felt sort of done with the whole thing. I had had a few successful videos, but all that posting took a lot of work, and it didn’t seem to connect with my writing.
Finally, I did start a new TikTok account, but I decided to post just my writing…no memes. I wasn’t going to put in the same effort. I’d limit the amount of time I showed my face or body. I was going to pour most of my time into writing, and the TikTok account would post snippets of what I was working on.
