Aunt Vietta’s Maple Syrup

Aunt Vietta grabbed the tin bucket and headed out to her favorite maple tree by the pristine lake. She stopped and breathed deeply of the fresh mountain air as she sauntered toward the tree, stopping to smell the pungent wildflowers every now and then.

She loved this time of year. The air was crisp and clean, the sounds of the lake and forest carried clear and sharp. There wasn’t another place like this one, her home of many many years. Deep in the heart of Ontario, Canada, Vietta lived and breathed family, the outdoors, life.

My Aunt Vietta was my mom’s oldest sister and lived a long full life. She loved tapping the maple trees for the syrup every year. She was an amazing woman, Canadian with Scottish roots.
