I’ve always been obsessed with finding out the truth about my maiden name. When I was a kid, I liked my last name. It was easy to spell, and I assumed — easy to read.

However, it was constantly mispronounced or misspelled.

Dustin?

Dotson?

Destin?

How hard is it? The S clearly comes before the T. Often, my brother would be called Dustin Dustin. I guess that’s sort of on my parents, for making his first name so close to his last name, but still.

So, my inquisitive little mind started looking up the origin of my last name.

Guess what? It didn’t exist. There were no other people with the last name Dostin anywhere.

I started asking around when I was a teen.

What dad, did we just make this shit up?

According to him, we kind of did. My dad told me a very jumbled, confusing story about our last name. He had very little information, as he had only met his real dad one time.

Severely depressed. Anxious about everything. Sound familiar?
