Work Hard, Be Kind, and Amazing Things Will Happen

When you found a startup, you try to find the best people. Those who can join the mission to execute on an initial dream; those whose joining is an affirmation that makes you feel like “yeah this could work;” and those who serve as ambassadors for the magic you hope to bring into the world.
Entrepreneurship is hard. Most startups fail. The only thing you can really control is the people you get to work with, and the impact on each other that you will make.
When I learned that Area 1 Security had been recognized as one of the best places to work in the San Francisco Bay Area, I felt an enormous amount of pride. I am really grateful for the little pieces of themselves that each member of our team has given over the past three years.
Area 1 Security hires for intelligence and grit, but we also hire for kindness. It’s a team that hangs together, because it is our nature.
I’ve always benefitted from the kindness and generosity of others. That’s something I’ve wanted everyone on my team to feel also.
Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get; but “if you work really hard, and you’re kind, amazing things will happen.” There’s no “method” for being authentic. But I’m very proud to work with a team that loves working together, and loves doing things a little differently.
