Why I Choose to Build Brands Instead of Buying Them — And Why You Shouldn’t Judge Either Way

The Social Pressure to Wear Success
We are living in a world where luxury brands are social currency. Having a designer handbag, sporting high-end sneakers, or showing off a luxury watch is frequently regarded as a sign of success. For some, these are a means of signaling status, belonging, and achievement. And that’s just fine — everyone deserves to spend their money on what makes them happy.

But what isn’t okay is the quiet judging that creeps in when one abstains from this vicious cycle. The side eye when you show up in unbranded clothes. The assumption that you “don’t care about quality” or “can’t afford it.” The unwritten pecking order that values consumption over creation.

Here’s the truth: Avoiding the costly tags doesn’t mean a lack of style, initiative, or achievement. To us, the true satisfaction comes from creating, not acquiring.

The Fulfillment of Creating vs. Consuming
I don’t spend money on costly brands — not because I don’t have that option, but because I’d sooner invest my money in building brands that add value and fix problems. There’s a sense of pride in creating something from nothing, in watching an idea become a product that makes a difference.

When you purchase a high-end item, the gratification is fleeting. It disappears with changes in style or the arrival of the latest “must-have” product. But when you create something — a startup, a product, even a personal brand — the satisfaction sticks around. You’re not only donning success; you’re making it happen.

Judgment Goes Both Ways
Here’s the point: This isn’t about shaming people who are brand enthusiasts. If wearing designer makes you happy, go for it. When it comes down to us judging people on what they choose to do — whether it is spending thousands on attire or nothing at all — that’s when the problem arises.

If you buy brands: Great! Treat yourself to something you enjoy. Don’t assume someone is unsuccessful or trendy because they don’t.

If you don’t buy brands: That’s okay too. But don’t criticize those who do as “shallowness” or “wastefulness.”

Choices are personal. Money is just a tool — some of us use it as a way to be, others to partly finance our dream. Neither of them is less.

The True Luxury is Liberty of Choice
Ultimately, the real luxury isn’t a logo — it’s the freedom to decide what matters to you. For some, that’s the thrill of wearing a brand that everyone wants. For others, it’s the fulfillment of building one.

So, the next time you feel tempted to fit in — or judge a decision by another person — remember this: Success isn’t something you purchase. It’s what you create, how you perceive, and if you live in accordance with your own principles.

And that’s a brand nobody can afford to put a price on.

Final Thought: Whether you’re a creator or a collector, the only wrong choice is believing yours is the only right one. Let’s stop judging and start appreciating different paths to fulfillment.
