Does Five Nights at Freddy’s Deserve the Low Ratings?
Review of the movie Five Nights at Freddy’s
The Five Nights at Freddy’s movie was announced way back in 2015. Eight years is a long time for hype to build up, deflate, and build back up again, which makes it hard for any movie to meet expectations.
In 2015, both of my older kids were super excited for the movie. They were in a FNAF (as the kids call it) obsessed phase, and they collected toys, watched YouTube videos, and made crayon drawings of the game. As time went on, their interests moved on from the games, though. They would have mild spikes of interest when a new game came out, but their interest in the franchise was petering out. When the movie finally came out, they were only really interested in if for nostalgia’s sake, and I would bet my final arcade token that most kids feel the same way.
Even so, my youngest was excited to see his first horror movie in a theater. FNAF has been a part of his life for as long as he can remember, and he was super excited. The horror aspect of the games is really only scary for younger kids, and this rings true for the movie as well. Aside from some fairly tame blood, jump-scares, and tension, it’s hardly a horror movie. My son’s take was that the movie was fun, but that he wished it was a little scarier.
