The term “Forbidden Door” has become synonymous with unexpected crossovers and collaborations between different wrestling promotions. It represents the breaking down of barriers and the possibility of dream matches coming to fruition. With recent buzz surrounding collaborations like AEW and NJPW, fans are eagerly awaiting more groundbreaking partnerships. But what if the next big collaboration involved the two biggest wrestling juggernauts: WWE and AEW?

The Forbidden Door Phenomenon: A Brief Overview

The concept of the Forbidden Door gained traction in wrestling circles with the emergence of All Elite Wrestling and their willingness to work with other professional wrestling promotions around the world. AEW’s partnerships with New Japan Pro Wrestling and TNA have resulted in cross-promotional Forbidden Door events that have captivated fans and blown away box office expectations worldwide according to Sports Illustrated. These collaborations have opened up a world of possibilities, leading fans to speculate about potential dream matches and crossover events.

New WWE Leadership Helps Keep Forbidden Door Hope Alive

The changing of guard at WWE has given way to leadership that may have softened on the idea of working with AEW. We wouldn’t have expected Michael Cole to acknowledge Sting’s retirement on RAW under the reign Vince McMahon, could there be more to this olive branch under the new regime? There have been rumors and speculation about the possibility of Dustin Rhodes showing up at WrestleMania. That would be the perfect catalyst for a WWE and AEW: Forbidden Door event.

The Potential Benefits Of A WWE & AEW Collaboration

A collaboration between WWE and AEW could have significant benefits for both promotions, according to Adrianne Fekete in her Forbes article Harnessing The Power Of Collaborative Partnerships:

“Collaborations allow brands to tap into another sphere of influence to gain further exposure. When done right, these collaborations can create a strong emotional connection with consumers and can drive real results for the brands involved. Global brands, musicians, filmmakers, celebrities, and athletes foster and protect the relationships they build with those whom they can learn and grow with.”

For WWE, working with AEW could provide fresh storylines, new talent exchanges, and increased viewership. It could also generate excitement among fans who have long dreamed of seeing dream matches between WWE and AEW superstars.

Similarly, AEW stands to gain much of the same from a partnership with WWE. Further, collaborating with the biggest wrestling promotion in the world could elevate AEW’s profile on a global scale and attract new audiences. It could lead to years of exciting crossover events and storyline opportunities that fans have only dared to imagine. What if you could bring back the nWo by actually having the new members invade another companies show? The possibilities could go on longer than the list of Jericho’s 1004 holds.

Challenges And Opportunities In A New Era of Wrestling Collaboration

Of course, any collaboration between WWE and AEW would come with its challenges. Each company has their own unique branding, roster, and creative direction, but with the right planning and negotiation, these challenges could be overcome for the greater good. I have faith in current leadership on both sides to accomplish all of this, as I think they know it would lead to a groundbreaking partnership that would change the landscape of professional wrestling forever. Just imagine being a fly on the wall for a conversation between Triple H and Tony Khan.

While a partnership between WWE and AEW may seem like a distant possibility, it’s not entirely out of the realm of possibilities. We never say “never,” in pro wrestling. As fans continue to speculate and dream about the potential of a crossover, one thing is clear to this humble mark: now is the perfect time for a WWE and AEW Crossover.
