After some recent soul searching, I’ve come upon this notion that I’ll call “reverse-pride.” Once we realize the truth and dangers of mankind’s pride and ego, the next natural step in most people’s lives is to live selflessly and with as little ego as possible. A form of discipline and self-denial to an extent. At the same time, we hear the obvious advice to not care about what other people think. This is a critical piece of the self-actualization component that everyone strives for in the journey of self-improvement.

It is no accident that almost every religion, philosophy, and holy man has preached temperance and moderation. True power is having control over oneself, not of other people. That is the mark of true mastery when you have disciplined yourself.

And this is all the more critical in 2024, during an era of “ME” culture that preaches self-affirmation and self-fulfillment that prizes comfort and immediate self-gratification at any cost (e.g. instant deliveries, ridesharing, vacations, attention spans, and work purpose).

But What Is Reverse-Pride?
