The word “philosophy” originates from the Greek roots philo- meaning “love” and -sophos, or “wisdom.” Love of wisdom. When someone studies philosophy they want to understand how and why things are, plus how to live a good life.

Have you ever felt intimidated by the thought of philosophy? Fear not dear reader! For I give you this shortcut guide below as an easy entry point to discover the wonders and joys of thinking.

I wanted to put together a quick intro to different philosophers…and tell it in my own words. It’s a big world out there with hundreds of teachings based in unique minds, geographies, and cultural heritages that influenced these thinkers. And few people will want to read thousands of Google/Wikipedia results. This is based on what I’ve read over the past 20-some odd years.

So we’ll get right into it — here is a short guide to all the major Western and Eastern philosophies and their teachings in super short blurbs, readable in under 15 minutes. Five minutes tops if you speed-read only the bold and italics, but then you’ll miss out on the fun stuff.
