SafetyPay began as a platform enabling alternative national and international online payment methods for the population of Latin America who don’t own a credit card, in partnership with local banks. We invested in SafetyPay in 2008 and since then the company expanded through other territories. Besides Latin America, this enterprise is now operating in the United States, Europe and Canada.

The latest significant announcement came from Brazil, where the company partnered with GOL, a low-cost airline based in Rio de Janeiro, to enable users to purchase airline tickets and services from the company without needing a bank account or a credit card. This is especially important in a country where nearly 30% of citizens (60 million of the population of 200 million) don’t own a bank account — let alone a credit card.

Adding to this, GOL is also the largest airline in the country, meaning SafetyPay’s solution will reach a broader target. This is good not only for those with lower socioeconomic status, who will now have access to a service that will grant them greater mobility around the country, but also for GOL, which can now reach a new and more extensive section of society, adding a meaningful social impact component to Safety Pay’s already successful business.
