The BMW S1000RR is a superb bike, but no bike is perfect for every rider. We have different riding style, different environments we live in and different conditions we put our bikes through. I’m lucky enough to ride this bike in California, but what a lot of people don’t know — California has some of the worst road surface conditions in the USA. Gravel, Pot-holes and other dirt is a daily problem and the BMW OEM Rear tire hugger has a huge hole in the middle of it:

The BMW OEM Rear Tire Hugger with it’s big hole in the middle.

Now if you are on perfect clean roads and dry roads this is not an issue. If you deal with gravel, then it directly throws it up to the under-tail of the bike’s painted areas and after a thousand miles your paintjob is already ruined. I don’t deal with rain, as I never commute on the bike and it is pretty dry here all year, but I heard the opening lets a lot of rain fly up on the riders legs as well.

A new Hugger should fix this :

Introducing the Aluminum Tire Hugger from ZTechnik http://www.ztechnik.com/

It is made out of solid Aluminum with a nice finish. The Installation was easy and the fit was spot on. The Package included shorter screws, lock-tight and rubber spacers for a solid installation.

Comparison :

You can see the OEM Hugger following more the shape of the tire, also the zTechnik is has less coverage on the sides which might be a problem for rain?
Left zTechnick, Right BMW OEM Part. You can see that the OEM part is way bigger but the zTechnick has way lesser top openings.

Finally that’s how the new product from zTechnick looks installed:
