One of the arguably best motorcycle helmets on the market has finally a slick way to mount a GoPro securely!

Introduction

The Shoei RF 1200 is called by RevZilla the “Goldie Locks” helmet (to quote our man Anthony), because it is a well rounded helmet that does it all — from touring to the track. The RF 1200 was a great step up from the RF 1100 in the aerodynamics department, which makes it a lot more comfortable to wear at high speeds, but makes it hard for GoPro users to mount their GoPro anywhere on the helmet.

There are many positions to mount a helmet-cam, but the most immersive footage is captures from just under the eyes of the rider. You get a great view of the surroundings and bike alike, while not “hovering” like a ghost over the rider when the camera is mounted on top of a helmet.

Example Video from the Chin-Mount

I have tested this mount with a GoPro 3+ Black and GoPro 4 Black through out an intense Highway 1 ride — The mount got wet, cooked in over 100F+, I was holding my helmet on it and it didn’t show any signs of losing it’s adhesion.

This way to mount is sturdy, lightweight and overs a great range of motion!

You need

  1. Shoei RF 1200 (might work with other helmets too)
  2. Dremel
  3. GoPro Sticky Pads
  4. GoPro Helmet Mount

Here is the How To

Everything ordered and just unboxed the amazon-packet? Good — let’s get started. First get the GoPro Helmet mount and remove the screws from the backside of it. Now you should have just the “J-Hook” without it’s base, which already looks a lot like the mount I used on my helmet in the photo below. Play around with it and you will notice that the flat surface of the “J-Hook” doesn’t fit very well onto the curved surface of the helmet … yet !

Make sure to leave enough room to be able to operate the chin-vent

Get out your Dremmel and use the sand-paper tool with it. You want to remove enough plastic from the “J-Hook” in order to nicely fit onto the chin of the RF 1200.

The supplied sand-paper tool has the perfect width to take out the center parts of the “J-Hook”. This is useful, as it fits the helmet contour even better. Remove enough material until you have a perfect fit — meaning to you put the hook onto your helmet and see no gaps. Now we can get to the sticky bit.

Get a GoPro 3M adhesive pad and put your contoured “J-Hook” onto the pad. Meassure how much you need to match the size of the hook’s base and cut of the remainder with a sharp knife.

Position the “J-Hook” so that it fits perfectly and you can still operate the chin-vents of your helmet.

  1. Clean the helmet surface and leave no cleaner residue
  2. Apply the adhesive pad to helmet and apply pressure for a minimum of 5 minutes (Ideally you clamp it down and wait a few hours)
  3. Stick the “J-Hook” onto the other the side of the adhesive for a minimum of 5 minutes (Ideally you clamp it down and wait a few hours)

Voila ! you are done.

This way of mounting is very light weight and offers a great range of motion
