Employee Career Discovery Day a Success

Our best asset at the City of Charlotte is you, our employees. So, when we heard through Queen’s Team that you wanted us to work on developing career paths, we listened. On Sept. 27, the city held its first Employee Career Discovery Day for employees to explore other careers in the city and learn about other departments.

Engaging with Employees

Career Discovery Day was created just for City of Charlotte employees. Through the employee survey and feedback from Queen’s Team, there were a lot of suggestions to develop career paths. This is one of the ways to introduce other careers at the city to employees. An attendee noted, “Thanks for your support and trying to understand our needs.”

More than 120 employees attended the event throughout the day to speak and ask questions to various departments. From being a truck driver to an admin to an engineer, there was information for everyone. During the event, employees learned that there are careers beyond their own departments and left with an idea of where they could advance.

Employees also had an opportunity to talk to leadership and even City Manager Marcus D. Jones.

“This was amazing and refreshing to see leadership involved and to have Mr. Marcus Jones show up.” — Attendee

More than careers

The event also included skills workshops on “Resume and Interview Preparation” and “Being Intentional About Your Career.” These workshops prepared employees for the next step in their career.

One attendee said, “It was very informative and very engaging in giving tips and examples on how to conduct yourself in an interview, prepare for it and to format your resume.”

About Career Pathways

Career Pathways is the city’s workforce development program and has been a part of city initiatives for years. The city recognizes that a diversity of skills, experience and education are needed when it comes to developing a highly skilled workforce. The Career Pathways program focuses on both existing employees and external talent.

More to come

Stay tuned for more career pathing opportunities. The city is still developing ways for employees to create their paths with the organization.

In the meantime, employees also always have development opportunities through city Organization Development and Learning (ODL).
